              To qualify for resident admissions, clients must be:

  • Verified mentally retarded according to latest AAMD definitions

  • Ambulatory, able to communicate needs, and minimally capable of self care with supervision

  • Potentially able to move about in the community without danger to self or serious disturbance to others

  • Currently enrolled or potentially enrolled in Intermediate Unit #1 Programming for school age adolescents (if 18 years of age or under)

  • Potentially able to be placed either in a sheltered workshop, specialized day programming, or competitive employment (if over the age of 18)

  • Successfully pass a pre-admission medical examination

 

Referrals are made through the Fayette County Base Service Unit located within the MH/MR clinic; however, initial contact may be made with the administrative staff of Laurel House, who will initiate the steps necessary for intake.  All referring information is reviewed by the Laurel House staff, with a pre-placement interview and review by the interdisciplinary team members as additional parts of the process.  It should be noted, however,  that final decisions regarding admission are made by the agency.

The Laurel House operation is a Community Living Arrangements Program completely financed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare through the Fayette County MH/MR Program.  Laurel House as an educational and residential facility and as an employer, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religious creed, disability, ancestry, national origin (including limited English proficiency), age, or sex.  This commitment is made by Laurel House and the Fayette County Mental Health/Mental Retardation Program, and is required by federal, state and local laws and regulations.
